This device is worn from the waist to the foot to limit the movement of the hip and knee. It is usually connected at the waist and monitors both legs for instability. HKAFO provides maximum stability in the hip, knee, foot and ankle areas. It can be made of plastic, carbon composites, hybrid variants, leather and metal. Different types of hip, knee and ankle replacements are available depending on the patient's presentation and diagnosis. HKAFO is used for a number of conditions, including muscle imbalance and/or weakness, paralysis (spinal cord injury, myelomeningocele), stroke, muscular dystrophy, polio, and MS.
Like the Reverse Walking Orthosis. (RGO) , the HKAFO allows you to put one foot in front of the other - more than normal walking. This is achieved by connecting two KAFOs with a belt, two cables or a push rod that transfers kinetic energy from one leg to the other (see diagram). Thus, when one leg is bent or forward, it causes the other leg to be mutually extended. This allows for a much smoother walk and greatly reduces the effort required to walk. A walker can often be pushed backwards with crutches with the forearm.
RGO is usually used for people with T12-L3 injuries (although higher levels are possible) who do not have enough strength to extend the pelvis. Good upper limb strength, a high level of motivation, good family support and minimal contractions certainly contribute to the successful use of the device..
